AutoCAD 2022 – Polygon Command

Learn about the Polygon Command in AutoCAD 2022, how to use it? By Akash Periyasamy Last updated : April 01, 2023

What is Polygon Command?

Polygon is defined as geometry with three or more line segments in it. It creates complicated geometry as the number of line segments increases. The interior angle of a polygon is 360 degrees. The polygon command creates a polygon either within a circle as an inscribed polygon or outside a circle as the circumscribed circle.

Common Names of Polygon

The names of the commonly used polygon are listed below:

Number of SidesName
3Triangle
4Quadrilateral
5Pentagon
6Hexagon
7Heptagon
8Octagon
9Nonagon
10Decagon

How to Enable Polygon Command?

Polygon command can be enabled using two methods namely,

  1. First Method:
In this method, the command is enabled by clicking on the icon shown below which is present in the ribbon panel.
    Polygon Command (Step 1)
  2. Second Method:
It is an alternative method in which the command is enabled by typing POL in command line.

Let us now understand how to create a polygon in both inscribe as well as in circumscribe method for better understanding,

Inscribe Method

  • Open AutoCAD 2022 and click on the new workspace option.
    Polygon Command (Step 2)
  • Enable the polygon command by any one of the methods explained above.
    Polygon Command (Step 3)
  • Specify the number sides of the polygon required to be constructed. Let us take it as 6 and enter it.
    Polygon Command (Step 4)
  • Specify the center point of the polygon. It can be specified at any point within the drawing space.
    Polygon Command (Step 5)
  • Enter I to enable the inscribe polygon mode.
    Polygon Command (Step 6)
  • Now, enter the radius value of the circle as 300mm and press enter.
    Polygon Command (Step 7)
  • Thus, the required polygon has been constructed.
    Polygon Command (Step 8)

Circumscribe Method

  • Open AutoCAD 2022 and click on the new workspace option.
    Polygon Command (Step 9)
  • Enable the polygon command by any one of the methods explained above.
    Polygon Command (Step 10)
  • Specify the number sides of the polygon required to be constructed. Let us take it as 8 and enter it.
    Polygon Command (Step 11)
  • Specify the center point of the polygon. It can be specified at any point within the drawing space.
    Polygon Command (Step 12)
  • Enter C to enable the circumscribe polygon mode.
    Polygon Command (Step 13)
  • Now, enter the radius value of the circle as 300mm and press enter.
    Polygon Command (Step 14)
  • Thus, the required polygon has been constructed.
    Polygon Command (Step 15)
