GSM: Global System for Mobile Communication
GSM is an abbreviation of the Global System for Mobile communication. It is a system standard leveled up for the second generation (2G) digital cellular networks designed by European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) to define protocols. For the first generation (1G) cellular networks, It was a substitution. At the beginning of the 1970s, the aim of designing and creating GSM derived from a radio system of cell-based mobile at the Bell Laboratories.
Working in over 200 countries worldwide, GSM is an unclose, digital cellular radio network. It comprises signals over a narrow range of frequencies by using a time division multiple access (TDMA) technology. It is increasing in America and Asia and takes under nearly entire Western Europe. It can also be used for data computing and sending text messages and not only for voice calls. To transmit or receive emails, faxes, browse the internet, check security, etc., a user can link or attach his GSM-enabled smartphone with his laptop.

Frequencies on which the GSM standard works
Following are the three different frequencies on which the GSM standard works,
- 900 MHz: By the original GSM system, it was used.
- 1800 MHz: To hold up the increasing number of subscribers, it was used.
- 1900 MHz: In the US, it is mostly used.

With a computer system, when a user link or attach his GSM phone, GSM gives the following services,

- Mobile Fax:
With GSM, a user can transmit and receive faxes to any location where GSM function is accessible.

GSM makes available for use secured access for corporate LAN. It converts into code the air connections and gives extra security for confidential emails and faxes.
Advantages of GSM
- For its clients, it makes available for use roaming worldwide to roam all over the world, Since GSM service is acquired over 200 countries.
- Its devices and services cannot be simply and easily reproduced and that shows GSM is highly secured.
- It has wide handling throughout the world.
- It has clear voice calls and systematic use of the spectrum.
Disadvantages of GSM
- Due to interference limitation in bandwidth happens which may cause because of too many users share the same bandwidth.
- It may cause electronic interference.
- It has up to 35 km fixed range for max call sites which makes it very limited.
