DVC: Damodar Valley Corporation

DVC is an abbreviation of Damodar Valley Corporation. It is a governmental organization that operates under the Ministry of Power, Govt. of India. It controls and manages power stations in the Damodar River areas in Jharkhand and West Bengal states of India. The organization controls and manages both hydel and thermal power stations. Its head office is situated in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The current chairman of DVC is Shri Gurdeep Singh.

The vision of DVC is to become the greatest incorporated power organization at the same time releasing responsibilities in the direction of flood control, irrigation, soil conservation with a pledge and assurance to the socio-economic progress of the Damodar Valley.

DVC Brief History

The floods starting from the Damodar River in the valley are restricted through a variety of attempts made over the whole century by which the result came in the form of Damodar Valley Corporation. The widespread area of Damodar River which is around 25,000 sq.kms covers the states of Jharkhand and West Bengal.

The Government of Bengal selected a board of Enquiry titled Damodar Flood Enquiry Committee after the 1943 flood. The suggestion of the committee was to establish an authority that is similar to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the USA.

In April 1947, the decision was taken by the Governments of Central, West Bengal and Bihar to execute the proposal given by the Damodar Flood Enquiry Committee and therefore in March 1948, the Central Legislature passed the Damodar Valley Corporation Act (Act No. XIV of 1948). Afterward, on 7th July 1948, DVC was founded. The project of Damodar Valley Corporation was the prime multipurpose river valley project of independent India.
