BARC: Bhaba Atomic Research Center

BARC is an abbreviation of the Bhaba Atomic Research Center. It was founded by Homi Jehangir Bhabha. It is a leading nuclear research center with widespread infrastructure for highly developed research and development which covers the complete range of nuclear science, engineering, and related areas. It is to be found in Trombay, Mumbai in India. Its key work is to discover the applications of nuclear energy which are peaceful predominantly in the region of power generation and utilization.

Mr. K. N. Vyas was the director of BARC till 2016. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Maharaja Sayajirao (MS) University of Vadodara.

The current director of BARC is Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty.

BARC also researches spent fuel processing (used nuclear fuel processing), disposal of nuclear waste, agriculture, and medicine, etc. It organizes and controls all complete details of nuclear power generation, which starts from the theoretical design of reactors to, computerized modeling and simulation, risk analysis, development and testing of new reactor fuel materials, etc. It also conducts complete examination and evaluation research in spent fuel processing which is used in nuclear fuel processing, and secure disposal of nuclear waste.

BARC had done researches in other fields also which focuses on applications for isotopes in industries, medicine, agriculture, etc. It also takes responsibility for the proper functioning of a variety of research nuclear reactors in the country.

BARC Brief History

• Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha who was an Indian nuclear physicist started the nuclear program in India. In 1945, He founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) for nuclear science research.
• In January 1954, Dr. Bhabha founded Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) to strengthen the nuclear programs and make the most of nuclear energy for the betterment of the nation.
• Dr. Bhabha also founded a variety of BARC Training Schools to accomplish the manpower requirements of the atomic energy research and development programs. The Adams Prize in 1942 and Padma Bhushan in 1954, both were given to Bhabha. In 1951 and 1953–1956, he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics.
• On 22 January 1967, AEET was renamed as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), after the demise of Dr. Bhabha in 1966.
• With a mission to make India independent in the field of electric power generation, the professionals and experts continued their nuclear researches programs at BARC.
