What is the full form of MTNL?

MTNL is an abbreviation of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited. It is a telecommunication corporation controlled and funded by the government of India. Its motto is "Transparency makes us different". It offers services for the most part in two metro cities of India; Mumbai and Delhi comprising the bordering cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Faridabad, etc.

Separately from Delhi and Mumbai, it also offers telecom services outside India through its subordinate corporations and combined business enterprises. In Nepal, its cooperative business enterprise, United Telecom Limited (UTL), is offering services and in Mauritius, its subordinate corporation, Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited (MTML) is offering services.

MTNL History

• In 1882, Bombay Telephone was founded.
• In 1911, the first telephone system was established in Delhi.
• On April 1, 1986, the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam was founded by the Government of India to develop, advance and spread out the telecom network in Delhi and Mumbai.
• In 1992, it has the control and domination in the market till the telecom industry was opened to private troupes.
• It was the Telecom Partner of the Common Wealth Games (CWG)-2010 for constructing communication infrastructure to convene the telecom and broadcast requirements of the event.

MTNL Products & Services

MTNL offers a host of telecom services.

Following given below are some of the services:

• Fixed telephone service
• GSM & CDMA-based mobile services
• Internet, broadband, ISDN and leased line services.

MNTL has also introduced a variety of telecom technologies in the country:

• ADSL2+ and VDSL2 in broadband.
• IPTV on MPEG4 technology.
• VOIP and 3G mobile services.

MTNL Joint Business Enterprises

• MTNL-STPI IT Services Limited
  MTNL-STPI IT Services Ltd. is a joint business enterprise between Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, (MTNL) with 50% and 50% evenhandedness participation respectively.
• Millennium Telecom Limited (MTL)
  MTNL has reorganized Millennium Telecom Ltd. (MTL) as a joint business enterprise corporation of MTNL and BSNL with 50% and 50% evenhandedness participation respectively.

Merger of BSNL

On the 24th of October 2019, the Government of India proclaimed restoration and reinforcement package for BSNL and MTNL which comprises:

• Monetizing assets.
• Raising funds.
• TD-LTE spectrum.
• Voluntary retirement scheme for employees.

Separately from the package, the Ministry of Communications resolute to join together MTNL with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. In anticipation of this, MTNL will be Subordinate Corporation of BSNL.
