LED: Light Emitting Diode
LED is an abbreviation of "Light Emitting Diode".
It is a two-lead semiconductor source of light that produces light when current flows in the course of it. It is a pn-junction diode that produces light when made active. It is a very significant electronic device because it is used in a variety of electrical and electronic devices in the present time. It is typically used in electronic test equipment, TVs, calculators, watches, radios, etc. It is also used in applications as varied as aviation lighting, automotive headlamps, advertising, general lighting, traffic signals, camera flashes, lighted wallpaper, plant growing light, and medical devices.
The first visible-light LEDs were of low intensity and restricted to red. Modern LEDs are available all over the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths, with the high light output.

LEDs Working
- In LEDs, when a proper voltage of electricity is applied, electrons cause to merge again with electron holes and release energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence.
- The color of LED's light is resolute by the energy bandgap of the semiconductor.
- LED is established as a radical and innovative product in the field of the light source. Its lamps are very energy resourceful, economical and long-term enduring.
- As in comparison to conventional lighting bulbs and fluorescent light sources, it is almost 80% energy resourceful.
Advantages of LED
1) Energy resourceful
- LED involves a very small amount of power. For example, LED TVs are highly energy resourceful than CRT and LCD TVs.
- LED does not generate heat, so it diminishes the cooling loads also.
- LED does not generate buzzing noises and flickers etc.
2) Environment Friendly
- LED lights are harmless. It does not comprise mercury, lead or cadmium. The better use of LED lights can diminish carbon emission.
3) Prolonged Existence
- With a suitable installation, the LED can be worked for a long duration of time with a very low maintenance charge.
4) Maintenance and Safety
- LED requires very low maintenance charge. It also has need of very low recycling charge.
5) Recyclable
- LED is recyclable with very low recycling charges.
6) Enhanced Picture Quality
- LED provides enhanced image quality than LCD.
- LEDs have enabled new text, video displays and sensors to be expanded. Due to their high switching charges, they can be also functional in highly developed communication technology.
