DHCP is stands for "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol". It is a communication protocol, which comes in the processing of application on the networks of principal communications protocol based Internet Protocol (IP).
Fundamentally, DHCP is based on BOOTP, although it can assign IP addresses in a progressive manner from a collection and retrieve them at that time when they are not coming under the processing of application. It can also be in under the processing of application to distribute a broad collection of additional configuration parameters to IP clients, which comprise platform-defined parameters.
DHCP History
- In 1984, the Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP) was launched, which was characterized in RFC 903.
- In the month of September 1985, the Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) taken the place of RARP, which was characterized in RFC 951, brought in the idea of a relay agent.
- In October 1993, DHCP was for the very first time characterized in RFC 1531.
Execution
The DHCP server consists of three techniques of allocation of IP addresses, comprise:
- Dynamic allocation
- Automatic allocation
- Manual allocation
Security and protection
In terms of security and protection, the base DHCP is susceptible to various numbers of attacks, for the reason that it does not take in any type of method of system in case of verification and confirmation.
These various numbers of attacks classified into three major classifications:
- Unauthorized DHCP servers giving fallacious or inaccurate details to consumers.
- Access to resources acquiring by unauthorized consumers.
- Resource exhaustion attacks commencing by DHCP clients, which are characterized as malicious.
