DDR: Double Data Rate

DDR is an abbreviation of "Double Data Rate", which is also known as double pumped and sometimes double transition. It is a process of transferring data in cooperation on both the growing and declining edges of the clock signal by the use of a computer bus in the field of computation. It is a highly developed version of the synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM), which holds itself for some time in case of clock signals before taking action as an acknowledgment, to the control inputs. It uses a 184-pin connector.

DDR Benefits

  • It reduces network congestion.
  • It diminishes infrastructure costs.

DDR Usage

  • In combination with microprocessors, it is used to transmit data linking in between the central processing unit (CPU) and the north bridge, which is in the order of core logic chipset, one of the two chips.
  • It is also used in case of Ultra-3 SCSI, microprocessor front side busses, DDR SDRAM, accelerated graphics ports and the Hyper Transport bus on AMD's Athlon 64 processors.

DDR SDRAM

DDR SDRAM with the rate of 64 bits at a time, data in the process transferred, provides a transfer rate (in bytes/s) of the product of memory bus clock rate with 2 times the dual-rate and with 64 times the number of bits transferred, which is divided by 8 times the number of bits/byte. Therefore, as a result, DDR SDRAM provides an utmost transfer rate of 1600 MB/s with a bus frequency of 100 MHz.
