CMOS: Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor

CMOS is an abbreviation of "Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor", which is also known as complementary-symmetry metal–oxide–semiconductor (COS-MOS). The technology of CMOS is most commonly used in the computer chip designing industry for the purpose of creating integrated circuit (IC) chips, which comprises microprocessors, microcontrollers, and other additional digital logic circuits.

CMOS History

  • In 1959, the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET ) was designed and created by Mohamed M. Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs.
  • In the beginning, the MOSFET fabrication processes were classified into two types, which comprise:
    1. PMOS (p-type MOS)
    2. NMOS (n-type MOS)
  • The Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor(CMOS) was developed by Chih-Tang Sah and Frank Wanlass by merging both the processes PMOS (p-type MOS) and NMOS (n-type MOS) to form an original category of MOSFET Logic.
  • In the last few months of 1960, CMOS was commercialized to make a profit by Radio Corporation of America.
