CDP: Columbia Data Products

CDP is an abbreviation of "Columbia Data Products". It was a data security based corporation which intended to manufacture a number of the foremost IBM PC clones in 1976. It produced some Z80 based prominent computers with multiprocessors and graphics facilities but after that in only a small duration of time, it lost momentum in that market and not capable of to produce more such prominent computer models, although, soon after, it made a change in its production by shifting its priority from hardware-based to the software development based corporation.

CDP History

  • In 1976, Columbia Data Products was established by William Diaz in Columbia, Maryland.
  • In 1980, CDP manufactured a number of Z80 based personal computers, in which their variety of Commander 900 series models with multiprocessors and graphics facilities became a success.
  • In 1987, CDP made a change in its production by shifting its priority from hardware-based to the software development based corporation. They created and given the license of Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) software to Western Digital Corporation (WDC), which is a provider of hard drive controllers.
  • In 1991, WDC trade their SCSI software production-based business to Future Domain, where it lost momentum in the market and failed to make progress.
  • At present, CDP is dedicated to providing services in data backup. Its head office is situated in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
