CCD: Charge Coupled Device

CCD is an abbreviation of the "Charge-Coupled Device".

Charge-Coupled Device is a light-sensitive integrated circuit engraved onto a silicon surface for the motion of activity of electric charge, that stores and displays the data for an image by forming light-sensitive elements, which are called as pixels. In contrast to older technologies, a CCD operates in a digital camera for the enhancement of resolution. They are extensively used in television and video cameras, photocopy machines, in scanners, surveillance cameras for security, fax machines, in mammography, dentistry X-rays, camcorder, etc.

Charge-Coupled Devices were very quickly at a greater rate taken on and implemented in the field of astronomical research by astronomers for almost the entire UV-to-infrared applications because of their high quantum states of being proficient and resourceful, linearity graphical representations in their outcomes, in contrast to photographic plate's effortlessness in use, and various other reasons.

History

  • In 1959, MOS technology, which is a metal–oxide–semiconductor composition configuration with MOS capacitors, is the foundational base for the origin of CCD, was formerly designed and created by Mohamed M. Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs.
  • In 1969, CCD is designed and created by Willard Boyle and George E. Smith at Bell Labs, while researching on MOS technology and operating on semiconductor bubble memory.
  • In the month of August 1970, the foremost operative and functional CCD is completed with integrated circuit technology. It was a comprehensible and plain 8-bit shift register accounted in the description by Tompsett, Amelio, and Smith.

Awards

  • In the month of January 2006, Willard Boyle and George E. Smith received the award the "National Academy of Engineering Charles Stark Draper Prize".
  • In 2009, Boyle and Smith acknowledged the award of the "Nobel Prize for Physics", for their innovation and creation of the CCD.
  • In 2010, Michael Tompsett received the award the "National Medal of Technology and Innovation", for his ground-breaking original work and involving innovative ideas in the field of advancement and development of electronic technologies comprising the design and development of the foremost original CCD imagers.
  • In 2012, Tompsett also acknowledged the "IEEE Edison Medal" for his ground-breaking original contributions to imaging devices, which comprise CCD Imagers, cameras, and thermal imagers.
