BIS: Bureau of Indian Standards
BIS is an abbreviation of the Bureau of Indian Standards. It is the National Standard Body of India which is operating in the groundwork and execution of the standards, certification formats for products and systems, testing and calibration services, etc. Its head office is situated in New Delhi and it also has five regional offices which are situated in Chandigarh, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi. Smt. Alka Panda is the Director-General of BIS as of 2015.

On 1 April 1987, BIS established and came into subsistence by an act of parliament dated 26 November 1986. It is the descendant of the Indian Standard Institution (ISI). It operates under the guidance of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution of India.
