BDS: Bachelor of Dental Surgery

BDS is an abbreviation for "Bachelor of Dental Surgery". It is an undergraduate degree program in the medical field of surgery associated with the mouth and managing the damages associated with teeth, jaw, and gums. It is a five-year undergraduate degree program in dentistry to train students for a flourishing career as a dental surgeon.

The five-year dental course is classified into two sections:

  • Four-year training
  • One-year compulsory internship

The BDS course is not only constrained to curing tooth decay. It also gives prominence to denture, surgery and a variety of dental problems and issues.

Eligibility for BDS

  • The students who have qualified for the 10+2 examination from the science stream with physics, chemistry, and biology are eligible for this course.
  • The entrance test for BDS can be at the state or national level in which these students can apply and have to clear it.
  • These entrance tests are carried out by a range of colleges and universities that provide BDS courses.

  • A qualified and competent surgeon can also get a job as a dentist in state or central government hospitals.
  • There are also a variety of career choices for a BDS in pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment manufacturing companies.
  • Indian army also recruits the dentist in army hospitals.
