ANSI: American National Standards Institute

ANSI is an abbreviation of the "American National Standards Institute".

It is a privately-owned non-profit organization that keeps a watch over on the expansion and growth of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. The organization also brings together and organizes U.S. standards with international standards so that American products can be used globally.

ANSI accredits standards that are designed and created by representatives of other standards organizations, government agencies, consumer groups, companies, and others.

The organization's head offices are situated in Washington, D.C.
ANSI's operations office is situated in New York City.
The ANSI annual operating budget is financially supported by the:
1. Sale of publications
2. Membership dues and fees
3. Accreditation services
4. Fee-based programs
5. International standards programs

ANSI History

In 1918, ANSI was in the beginning established, when five engineering societies and three government agencies established the American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC).
In 1928, the AESC turned out to be the American Standards Association (ASA).
In 1966, the ASA was restructured and turned out to be the United States of America Standards Institute (USASI).
In 1969, the current name was approved.

Earlier to 1918, these five established engineering societies:

American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE, now IEEE)
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME, now American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers)
American Society for Testing and Materials (now ASTM International)

Standards Panels

The Institute manages and governs nine standards panels:

ANSI Homeland Defense and Security Standardization Collaborative (HDSSC)
ANSI Nanotechnology Standards Panel (ANSI-NSP)
ID Theft Prevention and ID Management Standards Panel (IDSP)
ANSI Energy Efficiency Standardization Coordination Collaborative (EESCC)
Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC)
Electric Vehicles Standards Panel (EVSP)
ANSI-NAM Network on Chemical Regulation
ANSI Biofuels Standards Coordination Panel
Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP)

Each of the panels works to discover, manage, and bring into line voluntary standards pertinent to these areas.

In 2009, ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) created the Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC). NESCC is a cooperative enterprise to recognize and act in response by taking action towards the present requirement for standards in the nuclear industry.
