ACPI: Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
ACPI is an abbreviation of "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface".
The Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) makes available an accessible standard that operating systems can use to find out and put together in a particular form computer hardware components, to carry out power management by placing unemployed components to sleep and to carry out status monitoring in a computer.
In December 1996, it was first launched.
Objective
ACPI main objective is to substitute:
- Advanced Power Management (APM)
- The MultiProcessor Specification
- The Plug and Play BIOS (PnP) Specification
ACPI gets the power management under the control of the operating system, as resisted to the earlier BIOS-centric system that relied on platform-specific firmware to find out power management and configuration policies. The arrangement is fundamental to the Operating System-directed configuration and Power Management (OSPM) system, an execution for ACPI which takes away device management tasks from legacy firmware interfaces through a UI.
In the beginning, Intel, Microsoft, and Toshiba developed the standard, at the same time as HP, Huawei, and Phoenix also taken part afterward.
In October 2013, ACPI Special Interest Group (ACPI SIG), the original developers of the ACPI standard, decided to shift the entire possessions to the UEFI Forum, in which every branch of future development will take place.
At the end of January 2019, The UEFI Forum published the most up-to-date version of the standard, "Revision 6.3".
ACPI History
- In December 1996, the foremost modification of the ACPI specification was launched, supporting 16 and 32-bit addressing spaces.
- Until August 2000, it was not that ACPI acknowledged 64-bit address support, besides, to support for multiprocessor workstations and servers with revision 2.0.
- In September 2004, revision 3.0 was launched, carrying to the ACPI specification support for SATA controllers, PCI Express bus, multiprocessor support for more than 256 processors, ambient light sensors and user-presence devices, in addition to expanding the thermal model ahead of the earlier processor-centric support.
- In June 2009, revision 4.0 of the ACPI specification was launched, which added a variety of original features to the design; most prominent and noteworthy are the USB 3.0 support, logical processor idling support, and x2APIC support.
- In December 2011, Revision 5.0 of the ACPI specification was launched, followed by revision 5.1 that was launched in July 2014.
- At the end of January 2019, the most up-to-date specification revision 6.3 was launched.
