History of ABP News

On 18 February 1998, STAR News was introduced. It became an absolute independent channel from 2003. At the beginning with NDTV organizing and handling the production work, before 2003 it runs by STAR India on its own. In 2003, when the agreement between Star News and NDTV is no longer valid, STAR News was converted into a Hindi language news channel absolutely, in which division of the STAR and ABP tie-up.

After the agreement contract between Star News and NDTV ended in 2003 and STAR was very certain to operate the channel on its own, the government established a principle covering foreign impartiality in the News business to 26%. STAR then created a corporation called Media Content and Communications Services Pvt. Ltd. (MCCS) by moving into a combined business enterprise with the Ananda Bazar Patrika group, the corporation Media Content and Communications Services Pvt. Ltd. ran the channel STAR News. The share of the business possess by STAR is 26% in this combined business enterprise although the Ananda Bazar Patrika group possesses 74% in this combined business enterprise.

Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) Group on 16 April 2012 made a formal public declaration that they would end their combined business enterprise with STAR, enabling the Rupert Murdoch-managed business to pay their complete attention towards entertainment and move away from the news industry in India. The eight-year-long association with the 'Star' brand came to a closing stage. After their parting ways, the Media Content and Communications (MCCS) corporation, that possessed and operated the news channels, said that Star News which is a Hindi news channel would be label with new name ABP News, Star Ananda which is a Bengali news channel would become ABP Ananda and Star Majha which is the Marathi news channel would be known as ABP Majha. ABP Sanjha which is a Punjabi language version of the news channel introduced in 2014 is well-liked with northern Punjabi audiences. On 1 January 2016, a Gujarati language version called ABP Asmita was introduced.

In November 2016, the new COO who was appointed of the ABP News Network was Avinash Pandey. Before that, he was holding the designation of the chief revenue officer at ANN.
