In today’s fast moving and competitive life, everyone thrives to achieve a high profile lifestyle and earn a high salary package. In doing so one constantly tries to improve and enhance one’s skills, performance and develop a good working relationship with their superiors or boss. Apart from working hard, one needs to inculcate certain habits and ways which would keep him in the good books of his boss.
Some of the effective ways you can impress your boss are listed below:
Being Punctual: Always be punctual; reach office ten to fifteen minutes before time. Do not be late for office, as it gives an impression of irresponsibility and carelessness.
Tidiness: You should be appropriately dressed when going to office. Keep your desk clean and tidy, and also keep your surrounding work area neat and tidy. This will an impression that you are well organised person.
Respect: Be respectful towards your boss; always address them with Sir or Madam. This respect should not only be shown inside the office but also outside. Avoid gossips about your boss, making jokes or anything like that.
Sincerity at Work: Always be sincere in your work. You should be fully aware of your responsibilities and sincerely work to fulfil them. Try to be prompt in your work. Sometimes it may happen that you might be assigned work which does not fall under your responsibility; do not say no to it. Be positive and willingly complete the work. This will create a positive impact on your boss.
Feedback: When you are in a meeting and feedbacks are needed; give relevant feedbacks. Listen carefully what is being discussed, ask questions if you have any queries and provide feedback accordingly. This will show that you are attentive to what is being discussed. This will also give an impression that you are active and intelligent enough to suggest new ideas and suggestions for issues related to policy development or management.
Prioritise Work: make a list of the work which is more important. Prioritise work according to the priority list of your boss, i.e. consult your boss which work needs to be done first and urgent and work accordingly.
Greet on Special Occasions: Remember to greet your boss on special occasions, like Birthdays, Anniversary or on being promoted. This will make them happy and put you on their good books.
Be active: Whenever you are assigned a task, try to finish it before time. Do not keep any work pending, or procrastinate any work, especially those which are on the priority list of your boss.
Take Ownership: In crisis situation take ownership of the situation and try and resolve the problem in a smooth manner by discussing all alternative with your boss and working according to his advice and instructions.
Support Colleagues: Do your work with full sincerity, but also help your subordinates or colleagues when they are stuck with a problem with their work. This will give an impression that that you are co-operative and helpful by nature; which will impress your boss.
Reporting: Your bosses are very busy people with whole lot of things to do. So always make it a point to make a list of the tasks you are going to complete in the day and leave a copy at your boss’s desk. And before the day ends, make goal oriented reports of all the work you have completed giving all the details. These reports should highlight the achievements, the problem faced and the solutions applied by you to resolve them. The report should be short and crisp.
Compliment: Appreciate and compliment the efforts of your boss and colleagues. Compliments should be authentic and appropriately timed and should not look like flattery or false.
Approach Your Boss: There are situations where you face problems and need help. Do not be shy to ask for help from your boss. Approach them for their valuable advice and suggestions. This will prove that you respect their position and their views and ideas. It makes them feel important.
Stay positive: Always have a smile on your face, do not take a grump face to work. Stay positive whatever the situation is. Accept your faults and constantly work towards improving yourself. Never argue with your boss, put your points politely in a smooth manner.
It is important that you develop a positive relationship with your boss, as he will be responsible for your future promotions and career. Therefore aim to please your boss in a genuine way, to be in his good books.
