CDDI: Copper Distributed Data Interface

CDDI is an abbreviation of "Copper Distributed Data Interface". It is a copper-based standard for transmission of data in the field of networking in local areas. It is an alternative of fiber-based standard, which is used in optical fiber lie under physical medium, known as Fiber Distributed Data Interface. The transmission of data can be processed by Copper Distributed Data Interface (CDDI) through unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cabling at a data transferring rate of 100 Mbps, although the lengths of the cable are approximately limited to 100 meters. Copper cable chose to take up as a standard for transmission of data in the form known as Twisted-Pair Physical Medium-Dependent (TP-PMD), which is also mentioned as Twisted-Pair Distributed Data Interface (TP-DDI).

CDDI History

  • Independently, CDDI was created and designed by Cabletron and Crescendo.
  • In 1993, the companies "Cabletron" and "Crescendo" collectively merged their technological and machinery operations and acknowledged authorization by ANSI standard.

Use of CDDI

  • CDDI puts forward as an alternative to FDDI if, in a condition, the price of FDDI is turning out to be a subject of matter or concern.
  • CDDI makes available a 100-Mbps network with the state of being not useful, however at a lesser cost price, for the reason that in contrast to fiber-optic cabling, copper cabling costs less.
  • The application of CDDI is not broadly accepted because of the decline in the cost price of fiber optic installation. In contrast to CDDI, FDDI efficiency is better, its bandwidth and exemption are greatly advanced to interference.
  • In contrast to FDDI, CDDI does not offer safety and protection. Copper cabling can be exploited by making some other connection, at the same time as fiber-optic cabling cannot be exploited or misused by making some other connection.
