Scala – Bitwise Left Shift (<<) Operator Example

Here, we will read an integer number from the user and perform the bitwise left-shift (<<) operation. After that, we will print the result of the left shift operation on the console screen.

The source code to demonstrate the bitwise left-shift (<<) operator is given below. The given program is compiled and executed on the ubuntu 18.04 operating system successfully.

Explanation

In the above program, we used an object-oriented approach to create the program. Here, we created an object Sample. We defined main() function. The main() function is the entry point for the program.

In the main() function, we created two integer variables number, result , that are initialized with 0. Then we read the value of number from the user and then we left-shifted 3 bits of the number using the "<<" operator. After that, we printed the result of the left-shift operation on the console screen.

Evaluation of left-shift (<<) operator

Here, we entered the value 6 for integer variable number, now we will evaluate the below expression.

result = number << 3
result = 6 * (23)
result = 6 * 8
result = 48

After that, we printed the value of the variable result on the console screen.
