DAT: Digital Audio Tape

DAT is an abbreviation of "Digital Audio Tape". It is a technology based playback standard that be capable of to record digital signals on tape at sampling rates equal to, in addition higher and lower in comparison to a Compact Disc at 16 bits quantization. A DAT drive is a tape recorder, which records digital signal together with rotating heads and helical scan that are comparable to those, found in a video recorder.

The configuration of Digital Audio Tape achieved reasonable success in specialized and expert based markets and in the form of computer storage standard, which was designed and created in the configuration of Digital Data Storage.

DAT History

In 1987, it was launched, designed and created by Sony.

DAT Features

  • The DAT standard enables four sampling modes, which comprise:
    1. 32KHz at 12 bits on 2 tracks
    2. 32KHz at 16 bits in 2/4 tracks
    3. 1 & 48 KHz at 16 bits in 2 tracks
  • DATs time-span are in between 15 and 180 minutes.
  • DAT machines, which runs at different sample rates:
    1. At 48 kHz and 44.1 kHz sample rates move the tape at 8.15 mm/s.
    2. At 32 kHz sample rate move the tape at 4.075 mm/s

DAT Uses

  • In the form of successor configuration, promoters envisioned DAT to analogue audio cassettes as the compact disc was envisioned in the form of successor configuration to vinyl-based recordings.
  • A computer-grade DAT was launched for use, called as Digital Data Storage (DDS), because of high necessities in case of size proportion and reliability in data backups.
